Program Overview


For women who are keen to grow their businesses this course will empower you to explore viable opportunities, understand customers, generate creative ideas and consider risks. During the course you will create a strategy and a plan to take you to the next level and realise your growth aspirations.

Program Outline

You will study:

  • Opportunity analysis, idea generation and risk recognition.
  • Values, success and strategic planning.
  • Desirability, feasibility and viability
  • Storytelling, marketing and pitching for business.
  • By the end of the course you will understand how to:

  • Create and explore ideas and business opportunities in your sector, including ethical implications.
  • Conduct market research covering customers and competition to assess market size and viability.
  • Promote and market the resulting products/services to potential customers.
  • Guest lectures and case studies of local entrepreneurs will expand participant knowledge and understanding of the practical issues faced in identifying and researching a viable business opportunity.

    Learning Methods

    The course will be delivered online using the University’s virtual learning environment,

    CampusMoodle

    and the virtual meeting platform Blackboard Collaborate, which is similar to Zoom.

    Course information will be available through a welcome pack and the first session will be a short online induction and introduction where you get to meet course leaders and other participants and ask questions.

    Each topic will be introduced through an online content pack including text, videos and activities for you to review and undertake at your own pace prior to the relevant workshop where we will discuss the material.  Your participation in the online group discussions will enrich both your learning and that of the group.

    In the online workshops there will be small group activities undertaken in breakout groups and larger group discussions.  Brief talks will introduce each topic and there may be case studies or guest lectures to illustrate key points and bring the content to life.

    Workshops will take place on Tuesdays and Fridays 10:00 – 12:00 noon.

    There will be individual activities and some research to undertake between workshops.

    Assessment is by presentation and reflective report.


    Independent Study

    This course is completed online through individual study and group discussion. Your anticipated time commitment will be approximately 150 hours, including content review, activities, workshops and the preparation and submission of your assessments. Your course leaders will be there to facilitate your learning and support you through the course.

    This course is assessed through reports and an oral assessment.

    This course has been developed and will be delivered by a team with practical and diverse experience and expertise in a variety of businesses and the support of those running and developing businesses.  A number of guest speakers will also be invited to workshops during the course.

    The Inclusion Centre advises and supports students who disclose a sensory or mobility impairment, chronic medical condition, mental health issue, dyslexia and other specific learning differences. Applicants are encouraged to arrange a pre-entry visit to discuss any concerns and to view the facilities.

    Admission Requirements

    This course has been developed and designed to empower female owners of micro-businesses and small/medium enterprises (SMEs) in North East Scotland (Aberdeen City & Aberdeenshire) to innovate, adapt and grow their businesses in a post-COVID environment where aspects of their business may have changed.

    As such applicants must be female, live in the north east (AB postcode) and run or be establishing their own business.
