Program Overview
Your studies will include an introduction to sustainable development within the construction industry, in addition to a critical analysis of the challenges involved in developing and enhancing the built environment with responsibility to the local and global environment, society and communities.
There is a need to act to address the growing concern of climate change, in addition to the local and global issues that arise associated with this challenge.
This course provides understanding of how climate change connects to the Built Environment and construction industry, as well as ways in which the industry is trying to meet the sustainability agenda (both sustainable buildings and sustainable practices).
The module covers the key ideas behind sustainable development within the construction industry, methods to reduce carbon emissions, embodied carbon and life cycle assessment, water management, sustainable urban design and sustainable communities.
Program Outline
Introduction to the terms and concepts of sustainability. A selection of factors affecting human settlement, climate, microclimate, topography, infrastructure. Buildings in time and place, urban and rural contexts. Human factors such as health, social interaction and comfort. Resource and energy conservation, waste management, environmental and social impact, and net zero carbon.

You will study within a global group of professionals employed within the various construction industries. There are weekly opportunities to enter into online discussion forums to discuss topics and exchange views and experiences, thereby providing a broader worldly interpretation and application of the knowledge provided. A series of study guides will lead you. All learning material, activities, and reading resources are available online via the module.

Independent Study
All learning material is provided and students will be expected to work through this material independently before participating in discussion with fellow students, completing activities and undertaking assessments.

The Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment is one of the three oldest of its kind in the UK, with a heritage that extends back to the 19th Century.
Whilst we are proud of our history, we have continually evolved our offering to the needs of our professional areas today, combining innovative thinking with new technologies and contemporary practice across all aspects of the design and construction of building, public space and cities. Tutors involved with this short course have teaching and research interests in: project management, project management competencies in superior and average performers, organisations, performance, and competence (particularly the transactional / transformational debate), adoption of innovative practice in the delivery of online courses.
Dr Whitney Bevan is a lecturer in Construction Management with a research background in the delivery of sustainable buildings. Whitney has been involved in new build and retrofit projects that look to adopt energy efficient measures and renewable technology. Previous research has focussed on the challenges for the construction sector and its clients, working with the construction workforce, supply chain, local authority and end-users.
Assessment
The module will be assessed by participation within online discussion forums, online group work, and one main piece of individual written coursework.
