Course overview

This programme is designed for individuals working or intending to work in an industry related to flood management who are seeking to develop or enhance knowledge and skills specific to a role in flood modelling, Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS), resilience and adaptation and natural flood management.  The postgraduate course in Flood Risk Assessment, Modelling and Engineering (FRAME) addresses challenges and skills gaps in the area of flood risk management and engineering. The course has been co-designed with flood risk practitioners and offers a flexible and applied approach, allowing participants the option to study while remaining in the workplace – putting theory into practice.

Why study this course with us?

FRAME offers a flexible and distinctive 'blended approach' (classroom/field-based block delivery and online learning) to acquiring a postgraduate qualification. The combination of on-site and online learning enables prospective students to study while remaining in the workplace should they wish to do so. The course offers participants practical, flood-relevant experience that provides a sound basis to seek or continue a career in the water and environmental sectors.

You will gain experience by utilising the latest technological innovations in the field of flood risk assessment, including: augmented reality; hazard simulations; virtual tours; GIS and remote sensing; 3D mapping and modelling; reality capture; drone mapping; and advance flood visualisation.

You will benefit from regular engagement with practitioners, enabling you to develop practical and applied knowledge and skills in flood management.

Field visits to local, national and international sites are designed as part of the programme to augment and enhance your knowledge and practical skills.

We will encourage you to undertake projects and work in collaboration with employers to address directly key societal and industry-focused challenges associated with flood risk.

Scholarship Information

Applicants to our programmes who are of Black or mixed Black heritage may be able to apply for ESRI’s Geospatial Scholarship Fund.

Applicants to our MSc Flood Risk Assessment Modelling and Engineering course may be eligible for the British Hydrological Society MSc Studentship Award Scheme.

Program Outline

Teaching methods

You will learn through lectures, seminars, practical sessions, fieldwork, simulation exercises and innovative online learning sessions.

You will regularly work with practitioners to develop both specific and transferable skills applicable to flood management.

Assessment

Assessment is through a wide variety of coursework activities, including: oral and poster presentations, digital storytelling, virtual reality tours, briefing papers, simulations, consultancy reports, examinations, and an extended independent research project (dissertation) for those pursuing a MSc.

Work based learning

Employer engagement and work-based learning are an integral (but not compulsory) part of the course. You will be encouraged to undertake projects and work in collaboration with employers to address key societal and industry focused challenges associated with flood risk.

Job prospects

This course supports careers in the flood, water and environmental management sectors – such as flood modelling, natural flood management, SuDS, urban drainage design, geomorphological mapping, project management, community engagement and environmental consultancy.
