Course overview
Microbiologists study the various microorganisms with which we coexist. Many of these microorganisms cause serious human disease (referred to as ‘infectious disease’), whilst others have a positive impact on our health (such as many of the bacteria that live in our gut).
To understand these complex relationships we must first understand the microorganisms themselves.

The academic staff are research active and continually strive to promote research within areas of biomedical science, in which they have published research findings and discussed their work at national and international conferences. You will have the opportunity to join a research team to undertake your research dissertation in the final year.
This course provides an in-depth understanding of microorganisms, and provides the background necessary to pursue a range of careers relating to microbiology. You should therefore study this course if you have an interest in microbiology, particularly in the context of human health and disease.
Microbiology graduates are highly sought after in the NHS, industry and in research laboratories.
We have fantastic facilities where you will be doing a lot of practical laboratory work, such as simulating a laboratory environment where you will gain hands-on experience.
Program Outline
Teaching methods
Teaching on the course comprises a diverse range of methods and styles including lectures, small group tutorials, seminars, computer-based workshops and laboratory practical sessions.
As well as the traditional methods of teaching, e-learning and problem-based learning techniques will also be used.
This course has a strong practical focus, allowing you to develop the lab skills needed to become an employable Microbiology graduate. Laboratory practical sessions will be delivered in modern, spacious teaching laboratories.
The three-year course comprises 360 credits and each 20-credit (standard) module equates to 200 hours of study.
Assessment
Learning is assessed by a combination of examinations and coursework. The overall balance between these two forms of assessment is approximately 50:50.
Coursework assessments may consist of laboratory reports, data handling exercises, essays, poster and oral presentations, allowing a full range of skills to be developed.
The end-of-module assessment is normally by examination, consisting of a combination of multiple choice questions (MCQs), short answer or long answer questions.
