About Program

Program Overview

  • Course overview

Our Biology degree offers a range of subjects and unique experiences due to close partnerships with organisations such as Chester Zoo and other leading institutes, industries and charities. We supplement classroom learning with opportunities for work placements or fieldwork. There are also opportunities to take part in exciting laboratory-based research.

Why study this course with us?

We undertake diverse research activities that ensure enthusiastic delivery of contemporary content. These include countering the illegal trade in endangered species using DNA-based techniques; improved understanding of disease processes; cancer biology; microbiology; animal behaviour; and conservation biology.

We will encourage you to become a member of relevant professional societies, such as a member of the Royal Society of Biology, and participate at organised events.

    Program Outline

  • Teaching methods

Teaching and learning includes lectures, seminars, group discussions and presentations. Experimental work, including laboratory practicals and/or field studies, is an integral part of our course.

You will have access to extensive online resources, including videos, podcasts, self-assessment questions and background materials. Many staff use social media and interactive voting systems as teaching tools.

    Assessment

Assessment consists of coursework and end-of-module examinations (typically 50:50 in a module). Coursework can include practical reports, fieldwork, extended essays, presentations, posters or seminars.

    Work based learning

As part of your studies you may take our

    Work Based Learning

module, where you will be fully supported in securing a work placement of at least 150 hours, which you may be able to use in trying out a future career. Alternatively, you may wish to undertake Experiential Overseas Learning, where you can take advantage of our long-established links with organisations worldwide. Most students have the opportunity to undertake either one of these options as an integral part of their undergraduate course.

Oversees trips incur additional costs that vary each year depending on the destination.

    As a guide, this opportunity cost approximately £1,200 - £1,800 in 2016/17.
