Program Overview
This PgCert in Simulation in Clinical Education equips healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to design, develop, and deliver effective simulation-based training programs. Through asynchronous distance learning, participants gain a deeper understanding of experiential learning theory, simulation scenario creation, and debriefing techniques. The program is accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and prepares graduates for roles in clinical education and supervision.
Program Outline
Degree Overview:
PgCert Simulation in Clinical Education: Design, Development and Delivery
This program provides an opportunity to study the principles of experiential learning theory in healthcare simulation, the process of creating simulation scenarios, and the concepts underlying safe and effective debriefing. In addition to theoretical study, the course aims to promote the wider use of simulation modalities, non-technical skills and human factors in healthcare teaching, learning and practice.
Objectives:
- Equip graduates with the knowledge and skills to design, develop, and deliver effective simulation-based training programs.
- Foster a deeper understanding of the principles of adult learning and how they can be applied to multidisciplinary healthcare simulation.
- Enhance the ability to critically analyze and appraise the evidence base for simulation in clinical education.
- Enable graduates to critically analyze the use of simulation as an assessment tool in clinical education.
Description:
This program is suitable for healthcare professionals with a clinical facing role who are supervising students who learn through simulation. The teaching is 100% asynchronous distance learning, allowing for flexibility and convenience. The program utilizes a variety of assessment tools, including a reflective portfolio, project work, and assignments.
Outline:
The program comprises three distinct but complementary, compulsory modules:
- Covers topics such as fostering a learner-centered approach, relating teaching to the requirements of professional education for clinical competence, developing practical, generic skills in teaching and assessment, promoting reflective practice, and utilizing portfolio to demonstrate progress.
Theoretical Perspectives on Simulation in Clinical Education (15 credits)
- Enables learners to critically analyze and synthesize the evidence base for simulation in clinical education, including the evolution, variety, and importance of human factors in healthcare practice.
- Covers topics such as analyzing the role of simulation within a wider clinical curriculum, appraising the use of simulation as an assessment tool, and understanding the use of 'fidelity' in simulation and its impact on teaching and learning.
Simulation Design and Delivery in Clinical Education (15 credits)
- Equips learners with the skills to design, critique, and deliver simulation-based exercises and effectively evaluate the role of debriefing and feedback in these exercises.
- Covers topics such as designing and delivering simulation-based exercises, critically evaluating the role of debriefing and feedback in simulation, understanding the current technologies and modalities used in simulation, and recognizing the importance of faculty in the delivery of simulation-based exercises.
Assessment:
The program utilizes a variety of assessment tools, including a reflective portfolio, project work, and written assignments. The assessments are timed at the end of each of the three modules:
- Module 1: Reflective portfolio describing your educational philosophy, teaching environment, and a self-assessment of your assessment and teaching strategies, culminating in a professional development plan.
- Module 2: Project to design a simulation exercise to involve students that the participants are teaching, ensuring that the assessment is allied to your personal speciality and interest. This is assessed by the module lead and peers on the course.
- Module 3: 3000 word assignment describing a simulation strategy for your own teaching area described in module two.
Teaching:
The teaching on this program is 100% asynchronous, online distance learning. The program is delivered by academics from Keele University with experience in education and simulation-based training, along with experienced clinicians from the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust.
Careers:
Healthcare professionals who complete this program will be well-positioned to provide supervision and instruction in either a hospital or GP practice setting. They will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to design, develop, and deliver effective simulation-based training programs, fostering a deeper understanding of how to utilize simulation in clinical education.
Other:
- The program starts in October or February.
- The mode of study is online, part-time.
- The program is offered by the Faculty of Medicine.
- The program is intended for healthcare professionals with a clinical facing role.
- The program is accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
- The program fee for the 2024/25 academic year is £4,250 per year.
- The duration of the program is 1 year.
