Program Overview


This programme aims to develop research-based practice amongst professionals currently working within information security. As a result of the rapid growth in both the availability of global information structures (e.g. the internet) and the number of users, information security professionals are facing major challenges providing services that are accessible yet safe. Keeping business channels flexible and easy to use whilst guarding against the e-criminal is an ongoing project.

Program Outline

This unique course offers a professional doctoral qualification in the expanding area of information security. Most of the course is based on negotiated learning, which means you will construct research-based learning around your interests and experience.

The danger of cybercrime is growing and is affecting individuals, governments and organisations across the world. From phishing to hacking, scamming to grooming, botnets to cyberterrorism, the range and variety of threats seems to expand constantly.

This Prof Doc addresses system vulnerabilities and explores preventative measures, repair and detection. This course is aimed at professionals working within the information security area who wish to develop their research-based practice.

As a result of the rapid growth in both the availability of global information structures and the number of users, information security professionals face major challenges to provide services that are accessible and yet safe. Keeping business channels flexible and easy to use, while guarding against cyber criminals, is an on-going project.

We aim to improve professional practice in the information security area through our research methods.

Our course leaders continuously update their expertise, carrying out leading research within this market.


This is an extremely flexible programme that facilitates the professional and academic learning of information security students at different stages of their careers. It offers a range of post-qualifying and academic awards – including the Professional Doctorate in Information Security.


Taught modules assessment:

  • In all level 8 modules students must obtain: 60% overall with a minimum component mark of 50%
  • In all level 7 modules students must obtain: 50% overall with a minimum component mark of 40%
  • Students who, after the appropriate reassessment attempts, are unable to pass one or more of core taught modules will not achieve the award of Professional Doctorate.
  • Students who are unable to gain enough credits from the taught modules may be eligible exit with a lesser award.
  • Students who are unsuccessful in any level 8 module of assessment may be re-assessed on one further occasion only.
  • Students who are unsuccessful in any level 7 module of assessment may be re-assessed on three further occasions.

    ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

    To study at UEL you must demonstrate that your English level is at the standard for university study. We accept a number of different English language qualifications / tests for entry onto our courses, with IELTS being the most common. English language requirements vary slightly from course to course. All students are required to meet our standard English language requirements.

    Pre-sessional English

    in collaboration with Malvern House London.

    Whether you are looking to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level, if you don't meet the IELTS requirements for your choice of degree here at the University of East London, you might be able to study a pre-sessional English course over a duration 5 to 11 weeks, depending on your level of English.

    You don't need to apply to study pre-sessional English with us, you just need to apply for the course of your choice and we will decide whether or not you need the pre-sessional. And don't forget that whatever happens, you will have access to all the University's facilities and services, including the benefit of on campus accommodation from day one!
