About Program

Program Overview

We have designed our Postgraduate Diploma in Civil Engineering to develop your engineering expertise in line with the ever-changing demands of the profession.

We will enhance your knowledge in all the essential areas of engineering, from geotechnical engineering to construction management.

We will ensure that your research skills and general understanding are sharp enough to give you the competitive edge as you build your career.

Our campus location in the heart of London's Docklands means you will see close up the challenges facing the next generation of engineers, from intensive urbanisation and major economic regeneration to climatic change.

We also have excellent contacts with major industry employers, including Atkins, Waterman Group plc, Thames Water, SRK Consulting and the London Borough of Newham.

Our postgraduate engineering courses enjoy widespread professional recognition, and are accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) of the Institutions of Civil, Structural, and Highways and Transportation Engineers.

So, whatever your entry level, we will get your engineering career off to the best possible start.

Program Outline

This course consists of a number of self-contained, taught modules, organised around the various areas of civil engineering.

The wide range of subjects covered includes: Advanced Structural Analysis; Design of Concrete and Steel Structures; Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering; Hydraulic Structures and Costal Engineering; Project Management; Soil Structure Engineering; and Highway and Transportation Engineering.

There is a highly practical emphasis to our Diploma. You will learn the general theory and then apply it during fieldwork and by working on projects in our extensive laboratories, using the latest software.

These projects provide you with the learning opportunities and practical skills you will use in your future career.

You will leave with a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the most up-to-date practices and theories in civil engineering.

You will have the option to transfer to our MSc course, providing you meet the required standard. Many of our PGDip students go on to become accredited chartered engineers.

Your coursework will include analysis and design projects, research reports and group and seminar presentations. You will also attend lectures, seminars and tutorials and you will work individually and in groups.

All modules include coursework, where you will have opportunities to apply your knowledge to engineering projects based on real-life situations.

To support the hands-on nature of our courses, we have an impressive range of facilities. Our modern, well-equipped laboratories include a structures laboratory, a soil mechanics laboratory, a hydraulics laboratory, a highways laboratory and a surveying laboratory.

We also have superb computer facilities and you will be able to design and plan using the very latest software.

Expert feedback and support are always on offer from our dedicated team of academics, all of them experts in their respective fields of engineering.

Alongside their impressive academic credentials, many have extensive industrial experience as practising engineers. Dr Ali Abbas and his team have also been involved in research including coastal and river engineering, concrete structural analysis and design, water and environmental management, hydraulics and earthquake resistance.

Our postgraduate courses are some of the most flexible around. If you are an engineer employed in the industry, you will find that studying part-time can easily be tailored to suit your personal requirements.

We will assess you through a mixture of coursework, design drawings, oral examinations and an end of term exam.
