Program Overview
Our MSc Oil and Gas Management is ideal for people with no prior experience of energy management, as well those already working in the industry.
You don't need any prior education experience of the subject either, as our course provides a comprehensive overview of the entire 'value chain'. We teach you about energy production, infrastructure and use, so you’ll be equipped to work in senior roles in any area of hydrocarbon energy management.
UEL is a learning affiliate of the Energy Institute and all of our students will benefit from membership of the organisation.
It's also taught by well-connected experts, with global links to leading industry professionals and major energy companies. This, coupled with the fact that you'll be studying in the heart of London's most thriving business district, means you’ll graduate with a huge head start in a multi-trillion dollar industry.
Program Outline
This course combines specialist insight into the oil and gas industry with broader training in business management.
You'll be taught how to harness your entrepreneurial spirit by developing new products and businesses; how to manage risk and finance in the context of international markets; and how to overcome common problems that business owners and managers face.
At the same time, you'll be introduced to current themes and trends in the oil and gas industry, gaining valuable insight into the management of energy from upstream to downstream.
The course consists of three core taught modules that lay the foundations for understanding the oil and gas sector (Oil and Gas Management; Governing International Oil and Gas; Transition, Innovation and Sustainability in the Oil and Gas Sector) as well as an additional core module that provides training in international business management from a strategic and entrepreneurial perspective (Managing Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Sustainable International Supply Chains).
Everything you learn will be rooted in the contemporary business landscape, drawing on real, practical examples and case studies so you'll be able to enter the industry upon graduation with a solid understanding of issues, challenges and opportunities that the sector faces.
We consistently review and develop our courses and modules to ensure they are up-to-date with sector and industry graduate skills demands. Course structure, modules and options are subject to change.
You'll be taught through a mixture of lectures and seminars delivered by both academics and industry experts. You will have plenty of contact with our academic staff and, as in the real world of business, teamwork is a vital component of this course so you will be expected to work closely with your fellow students.
Inspiring guest lectures delivered by sector representatives will also be an integral part of the programme, creating a more dynamic, blended learning environment that will also provide you with excellent networking opportunities.
As well as studying a number of taught modules, you'll have the chance to conduct independent research on a topic of your choice through the dissertation module. The dissertation is a valuable way of, not only developing important research skills, but also honing your expertise in a particular area. You'll be working directly on real, cutting-edge issues in the oil and gas industry so you could be contributing to ongoing research with potential opportunities to deliver papers and publish work.
As a master's student, you will be expected to conduct plenty of independent work and research, supported by our experienced academic team. We will provide you with the tools to help, including an online portal, access to oil and gas research databases and other sources.
You'll be assessed through a mixture of different methods, allowing you to develop multiple study skills and demonstrate your abilities in a variety of ways. Core knowledge will be assessed through a mixture of coursework and essays, and you'll work on real industry case studies that will also be assessed through coursework.
To ensure you develop practical skills that can be applied in the workplace, you will also be assessed on industry and consultancy reports that you will be tasked with writing, and some assessment will be carried out via group and project work to develop team-working skills.
