This programme is ideal if you want to pursue a career as a Big Data scientist or expert, deriving valuable insights and business-relevant knowledge from massive amounts of data.

The programme provides you with the in-depth knowledge and advanced skills that you will need to actively contribute to the development and design of systems for Big Data analytics. There is a real need in the job market for people who are expertly trained to model huge amounts of data, with demand for data-driven systems in all sectors increasing year-on-year.

During this course, you will cover the fundamental statistical methods (e.g. data mining and machine learning), technological tools (e.g. Cloud, Hadoop, Spark), and security measures required to undertake large-scale data analysis.

  • Our specialist laboratories have everything you will need to develop a thorough critical understanding and gain valuable hands-on experience in a wide range of emerging technologies, such as Cyber Forensic lab, the OpenStack Cloud platform, and multiple Big Data platforms.

    Our dedicated and specialist staff will support you throughout the course and you will be assigned a personal tutor, a course tutor and module tutors to oversee your progress.

    , the programme leader, has a wide range of expertise in Big Data Analytics, Computational Intelligence and Cyber Security in both industry and academia.

    This programme consists of seven taught modules (Including a dissertation) and depending on the accumulated credits there are two awards:

    Postgraduate Certificate in Big Data Technologies

    (60 credits; two taught modules) and

    Postgraduate Diploma in Big Data Technologies

    (120 credits; four taught modules).

    As a key element of this course you will be asked to complete a dissertation on a cutting-edge Big Data topic of your choice. Whatever topic you choose, your dissertation will make an active contribution to the field, providing you with excellent experience for a future career in Big Data.


    You will be assessed using a mixture of practical coursework and a theory exam. Coursework can take a variety of forms, including laboratory work, data analysis and oral presentations. The Research Dissertation is assessed on a final written report, a poster presentation and a practical component. You will receive detailed feedback on all assessment outlining strengths and areas of improvement.

    ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

    To study at UEL you must demonstrate that your English level is at the standard for university study. We accept a number of different English language qualifications / tests for entry onto our courses, with IELTS being the most common. English language requirements vary slightly from course to course. All students are required to meet our standard English language requirements.

    Pre-sessional English

    in collaboration with Malvern House London.

    Whether you are looking to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level, if you don't meet the IELTS requirements for your choice of degree here at the University of East London, you might be able to study a pre-sessional English course over a duration 5 to 11 weeks, depending on your level of English.

    You don't need to apply to study pre-sessional English with us, you just need to apply for the course of your choice and we will decide whether or not you need the pre-sessional. And don't forget that whatever happens, you will have access to all the University's facilities and services, including the benefit of on campus accommodation from day one!
