Program Overview

A degree in BSc (Hons) International Sport with Enterprise will provide you with an understanding of the international sport environment and opportunities to engage with industry leaders from around the globe as well as international placement opportunities. Delivered in partnership with the West Ham United Foundation (WHUF), students will have access to hands-on experience through programmes such as the 150Club health referral scheme and our international projects, including, the Gothia Cup as well as short-term placements in Spain and the Netherlands.

Program Outline

From the outset you will be immersed in the theoretical knowledge and practical skill development that is needed to succeed as both sport business entrepreneurs and leaders of sport organisations and events.

We will help you develop and hone your skills in product development, marketing and sport project management. We will equip you so that you will be able to recognise, lead and develop health/coaching related programmes that engage, motivate and inspire. The hands-on approach to your degree will assess:

  • Cultural development
  • Performance analysis
  • Skill enhancement
  • Team leadership development.
  • In year one you will learn to recognise how key sport, leisure and health industry players develop their product and keep themselves current. In year two you will  consider the development of business and event opportunities that may exist for you to strategically engage with, and analyse the market for potential growth. By year three the ideas that you will have developed so far will come to life with your event proposal and the topic of your focused research plan being assessed. This event will be the culmination of your strategically crafted business ideas, underpinned by an understanding of the market and completed with your own branding for the product.

    What we research:

  • Sport, health and leisure development
  • International event organisation
  • Cultural exchange and personal growth

  • From the outset you will be immersed in the theoretical knowledge and practical skill development that is needed to succeed either as a sport business entrepreneur or leader of sport organisations and events. Through our unique collaboration with the West Ham United Foundation you will be taught by leaders in industry who are in place to mentor and guide you towards your dream career in sport. As a collaborative degree programme you will be provided with opportunities to access state of the art facilities at West Ham United and also be able to take part in placement experiences across their organisation that will help you to stand out from other graduates.

    Guided independent study

Alongside the taught elements of the programme you will be provided with guided independent study tasks for each module that are aimed at developing your understanding of key topics as well supporting you in preparation for assessments. These tasks could range from completing key reading, writing a reflective account of an experience or sourcing a learning opportunity.

    Academic support

We value the importance of work-based learning throughout the programme and therefore your timetable will reflect this with teaching taking place over two full days per week, ensuring you have enough time to gain important work experience. You will learn through taught lectures, group seminars and bespoke individual support sessions focused on developing your employability skills, led by your personal tutor.

    Dedicated personal tutor

When you arrive, we'll introduce you to your personal tutor. This is the member of staff who will act as your academic advisor and should be the first port of call, after the module leader, to offer you the support you may require to be successful at University. This support is wide-ranging but may include employability support, career advice and monitoring your progress throughout your journey.

    Workload

Each year you will spend around 300 hours of timetabled learning and teaching activities. These may be lectures, workshops, seminars and individual and group tutorials. Contact hours may vary depending on each module.

    Your timetable

Your individualised timetable is normally available to students straight after enrolment. Whilst we make every effort to ensure timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week between 9am and 5pm. Timetables for part-time students will depend on the modules selected. Each term students will study 3 modules, totalling 6 modules per academic year.

    Class sizes

We expect approximately 40 students to take this course. Lecture sizes may vary with smaller groups to the norm to provide students with a more bespoke learning environment.

Coursework will include presentations, reports, research-based assignments and portfolios based upon developing practical industry-specific skills. The approximate percentages for this course are:

  • Year 1: 50% coursework, 50% practical
  • Year 2: 80% coursework, 20% practical
  • Year 3: 60% coursework, 40% practical
  • You'll always receive detailed feedback outlining your strengths and how you can improve. We aim to provide feedback on assessments within 20 working days.
