BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS

Program Overview

This undergraduate course is designed for students who are committed to becoming primary school teachers. In only three years, you will gain a BA (Hons) degree and Qualified Teacher Status. Your degree will focus on children's rights, values and learning.

This course trains you to teach the five to eleven age range, but this will not restrict you to working with this age group. You will study pedagogy and subject knowledge covering both the Early Years Foundation Stage and National Curriculum.  East London offers multicultural, multilingual and vibrant schools in which to learn, but your training at UEL will qualify you to teach anywhere in England or Wales.

UEL's Primary Education with QTS team is made up of experienced practitioners and researchers, who research a range of childhood issues and who have diverse experience in primary and early years' education.

With high graduate employability, this qualification provides a wide range of opportunities for career development across the primary education sector.

Program Outline

The undergraduate course is designed for students who are committed to becoming primary school teachers. You will learn how to be a primary class teacher, ranging 3-11 years. By the end of the three years, you will understand how to teach the entire primary curriculum to a class of 30 pupils and be confident and competent in doing so. Your academic career will focus on children's rights, values and learning.

You will leave the course with outstanding subject knowledge across the curriculum. You will have an understanding of how to plan and deliver engaging and motivating lessons and how to support your pupils' progress. You will learn how to identify the strength and needs of your pupils and make sure that everyone in your class is included and challenged. You will understand how to assess pupils' learning, how to spot the gaps in their learning and how to plan to fill those gaps. You will engage in critical academic study of current key issues and ideas in education in the UK.

Your course will lead to the recommendation of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You also have to complete coursework that contributes to your understanding of teaching and learning and carry academic credit, leading to the award of a BA (hons).

Course work will include presentations, research-based assignments, portfolios of work and practical exercises.

Guided independent study

When not attending timetabled lectures you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. This will typically involve reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking preparing coursework assignments and presentations, and preparing for assignments. Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities including online resources, Microsoft Teams and Moodle.

We are investing in key areas beyond your studies including our career services, library and well-being, to be available both face-to-face on campus and online with many of these available 24/7.

Academic support

Students are supported with any academic or subject related queries by module leaders and former and current UEL students. An Academic Advisor will support you as you set your personal academic and professional goals each term and signpost UEL services that you can access. If you need a bit of extra help with certain skills such

as academic writing, English, maths or statistics, our Academic Tutors offer workshops, drop-in

sessions and one-to-one appointments to help our students achieve their potential.

You can receive advice and guidance on all aspects of the IT systems provided by the university from our IT Service Desks located on all three campuses. Our Student Support hubs in Docklands and Stratford feature centralised helpdesks to cater for your every need.

We have new, modern library facilities on both campuses offering inspirational environments for study and research. Libraries contain resources in print and digital formats, a range of study spaces and dedicated librarian who can assist with your learning.

UEL provides also support and advice for disabled students and those with specific learning difficulties (SPDs). Your overall workload consists of class and online tutor led sessions, individual learning, practical activities.

Dedicated personal tutor

Our aim is to prepare our students for a broad range of careers, so that they can make amazing contributions to their communities. When you arrive, we'll introduce you to your personal tutor. This is the member of staff who will provide academic guidance, be a support throughout your time at UEL and who will show you how to make the best use of all the help and resources that we offer.

We teach using a wide variety of methods to ensure your learning experience is diverse and that different aspects of your course are suited to develop specific skills. You will benefit from a mixture of classroom teaching, practical teaching experience, independent study, tutorials and written assignments - all of which will develop your theoretical and practical understanding in different ways.

Our superb academic staff have a wealth of teaching experience and will assist you with supervised lesson planning, provide feedback on your teaching experience, and guide you through observation sessions with peers and qualified teachers.

We assess all modules through different forms of coursework. Assessment methods include group works, exams and individual work including essays.

In addition to writing traditional essays, you'll be required to write reports, policy reviews and give presentations. This is to ensure you gain skills that are relevant to and can be transferred to the workplace. In your final year, you'll write a research dissertation.

All grades count towards your module mark.
