Overview:
This three-year program equips students with the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to become outstanding and ambitious Primary Teachers. The program emphasizes practical experience through placements in partner schools and focuses on developing moral purpose, an enthusiastic, innovative, and flexible approach, and a commitment to inclusivity.

Outline
Course structure:
The program utilizes a blended approach, offering interactive lectures combined with smaller seminar discussions for deeper engagement with the material. Practical experience is gained through placements in partner schools, allowing students to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world settings.
Year One:
- The Hope Teacher: Introduces students to key theories of child development, learning, and education. Covers legal responsibilities, policies, and practices in education.
- Initial Professional Development: Focuses on studying the key theories of child development and predominant theories of learning in the twenty-first century. Examines legal responsibilities for safeguarding pupils.
- Subject Knowledge and Pedagogy: Introduces key aspects of the National Curriculum subjects and the requirements of the Primary Curriculum. Covers primary teaching of foundation subjects such as Modern Foreign Languages, Art, History, Geography, Music, and Computing.
- Professional Placement Learning: Includes a six-week block placement with a one-week placement induction and one week Early Reading enhancement in a partnership setting. Concentrates on observation, planning, and teaching under the guidance of experienced mentors.
- ITAPs: Focuses on pivotal concepts of Early Reading and Phonics, Early Mathematics, Curriculum Design- Planning and Adaptive Teaching- Science.
Year Two:
- The Hope Teacher: Develops the knowledge base by studying factors affecting learning processes, including learners’ backgrounds. Examines socio-political and cultural contexts in which learning and teaching occur.
- Initial Professional Development: Explores effective learning environments and the evolution of formal and informal learning. Studies the theories of effective classroom and behavior management and adaptive strategies. Investigates the role of planning and assessment, including methods of assessing pupil progress.
- Subject Knowledge, Curriculum and Pedagogy: Teaches how to identify and plan to address children’s misconceptions. Explores subject-specific strategies for organization and management. Studies primary teaching of foundation subjects such as Art, History Geography, Religious Education and Computing.
- Enhanced Specialism area: Allows students to select a specific area of interest for deeper study and leadership development. Options include English, Science, Mathematics, Music, Every Child Matters, Modern Foreign Languages, Physical Education, Special Educational Needs or Early Years.
- Professional Placement Learning: Includes a six-week block placement with a one-week placement induction. Introduces short intensive training placements in adaptive teaching for SEND and EAL, and a wider perspectives focus enhanced placement in different partnership settings.
- ITAPs: Continues the focus on pivotal skills of planning for progress and scaffolding for multilingual learners.
Year Three:
- The Hope Teacher: Immerses students in the philosophies of education and the diverse purposes of education. Explores critical perspectives on the role of educators and education within and outside the school context.
- Initial Professional Development: Examines the theoretical underpinnings and associated national policy and guidelines of education. Critically reflects on key theories, associated research, and teaching strategies. Explores the nature and evolving purposes of teaching and learning in the twenty-first century. Delves into the theoretical foundations of teaching and learning initiatives and professional ethics. Learns how to use assessment data to inform planning and address current issues in initial and continuing professional development.
- Subject Knowledge, Curriculum and Pedagogy: Gain an advanced understanding of how children develop their knowledge. Studies in-depth topics such as assessment, inclusion, and PSHE. Develops creativity in the primary curriculum and cultivates a innovative and constructively critical approach to education. Explores innovative practice and strategies for developing children’s creative thinking across the primary phase.
- Enhanced Specialism Area: Focuses on contemporary leadership and management aspects of the chosen area in the primary setting. Explores the nature of educational enquiry in preparation for employment.
- Professional Placement Learning: Consists of a 10-week block placement in one of the partner schools, providing extensive experience in a real-world classroom environment.
Assessment
The program utilizes a variety of assessment methods to evaluate student learning, including:
- Formal written exams: Assessing students' comprehension of key concepts and theories.
- Essays: Encouraging students to analyze and present information in a structured and critical manner.

This program prepares graduates for a rewarding career as a Primary Teacher. Upon successful completion, students will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Graduates have the opportunity to work in a variety of school settings, ranging from local partnerships to international schools abroad. Additionally, the program equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary for further study in the field of education, such as pursuing an MEd QTS course.

The program also offers optional study abroad opportunities in Year 2, allowing students to experience teaching in different cultural contexts and broaden their understanding of education.
The tuition fees for the 2024/25 academic year are £9,250 for full-time undergraduate courses. If you are a student from the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands, your tuition fees will also be £9,250. The University reserves the right to increase Home and EU Undergraduate and PGCE tuition fees in line with any inflationary or other increase authorised by the Secretary of State for future years of study.
