Program Overview

This part-time distance learning program offers two pathways: MSc and MRes. The MSc pathway emphasizes research methods, project design, risk management, and corporate social responsibility in health and safety management. The MRes pathway focuses on research methodology and a substantial research project. Core modules provide skills in research methods, literature review, and research project design. Supplementary modules cover various topics in health and safety management, including disaster management, safety assessment, flood risk, and mental health at work.

• Literature Review: Covers the purpose, practicalities, and writing of literature reviews.
• Designing Research Projects: Examines the requirements for writing research proposals, including formulating research problems, constructing hypotheses, and creating suitable research designs.
• Advanced Health and Safety Risk Management: Covers the content, structure, scope, and implementation of ISO 31000:2009 and BS 31100:2011, as well as the role of leadership in health and safety management.
• Corporate Social Responsibility in Health and Safety Management: Studies the principles of social responsibility and transparency, considering the balance between accountability, ethical behavior, stakeholder interests, and the rule of law.
• Disaster and Emergency Management: Develops an understanding of the potential impact of disasters on organizations and methods of managing disasters and emergencies.
• Safety Case Production and Assessment: Covers the purpose of safety cases, safety analysis techniques, safety case production, and safety case structure.
• Flood Risk Management: Explores different types of flooding, their impact on people and property, and flood defenses such as land use management, sustainable drainage systems, and managed realignment of banks.

• MSc students complete taught modules during the first year and the first semester of the second year, ending with a six-month research dissertation.
• MRes students emphasize research methodology modules, leading to a 12-month, 120-credit research project centered around workplace-related topics in the field.
• Core modules provide skills in research methods, literature review, and research project design.
• MSc students delve into fundamental subjects including advanced health and safety risk management and corporate social responsibility in health and safety management.

Tuition fees MRes £6,500 Fees are paid at the start of each year of these courses and the fees stated above are for the first year only. Fees can change from year to year so the fee for the second year may be higher than that for the first year. If you choose to study part-time, fees are charged pro-rata to the full-time fee, according to the number of credits being studied. Tuition fees for the 2025/26 academic year are still being finalised and may change. Confirmed fees will be available by June 2024.
