Program Overview

This 2-4 year program offers full-time and part-time study options for students seeking a postgraduate degree in Music. Students can specialize in Musicology, Performance, or Composition, and will have access to research opportunities, supervision, and presentations. • Program Structure: The program is designed to be completed in 2 to 4 years, with both full-time and part-time study options available.
• Research Areas: Students can choose to focus their research in the areas of Musicology, Performance, or Composition.
• Supervision: Each student will have a supervisory committee led by a main supervisor and assisted by two other staff members with relevant expertise.
• Research Meetings: Regular meetings with the supervisor are expected, and students can also consult other members of their committee as needed.
• Presentations: Students are encouraged to present reports on their work in seminars and colloquia during their period of study.
• Final Assessment: The final assessment is through a viva voce examination by an appointed panel.
• Submission Requirements:
• Historical Musicology / Editorial Musicology:
Thesis of 60,000 words or equivalent.
• Composition: Portfolio of compositions (around 70 minutes of music) with an accompanying essay (5,000-7,000 words).
• Performance:
• Full-length public recital (40-50 minutes) and CD (40-50 minutes) featuring different repertoire (60%).
• Dissertation (20,000 words) or composition of comparable length (40%).
• Research Opportunities: The School has a history of establishing collaborative links, often with full funding.
• Course Duration: 2 years full-time or 4 years part-time (excluding the write-up year).
• Entry Requirements:
• Degree at British Master's standard (merit or equivalent)
• Project proposal relevant to the program's duration and academic level.
• Performers: audition or submit a recent unedited video performance (45-60 minutes) featuring contrasting repertoire.
• Musicologists and Composers: submit samples of their work.
• Non-native English or Welsh speakers: IELTS overall result of 6.5 with no individual score below 6.0.
