This program provides a comprehensive and practical experience in the many forms of writing and production for theatre. It blends practice, theory, and history and is designed for individuals who want to:

• Develop playwriting skills and knowledge of script development and support
• Open pathways to various theatre roles, including dramaturgy
• Learn about the changing role of playwrights and dramaturges in contemporary theatre
• Define your own creative practice while developing valuable transferable skills in research, project management, and critical reflection

Program Description:

This MLitt program is unique in Scotland for combining playwriting with dramaturgy. Students will undertake core practical playwriting and dramaturgy courses before choosing to:

• Specialize in dramaturgy:
• This pathway involves a dramaturgy placement with a theatre company or arts organization.
• Students will gain practical experience working alongside professional dramaturges and contribute to the development of new theatrical productions.
• Specialize in playwriting:
• This pathway involves creating a full-length play through workshops and staged readings with professional actors and theatre directors.
• Students will receive personalized feedback and guidance from leading playwrights and theatre practitioners.
Additionally, students will produce an independent research project over the summer, allowing them to explore a specific area of interest related to playwriting or dramaturgy.
