Program Overview

The Industrial Heterogeneous Catalysis MRes program at the University of Glasgow combines two projects with a taught component, providing students with practical research skills and theoretical knowledge in heterogeneous catalysis. The program prepares graduates for careers in the chemical industry or further study in academia, with potential job titles including Research Project Manager, Chemical Engineer, and Research Chemist. The program is designed to equip students with the skills to work in any aspect of the chemical industry, including plant support, research, QA, and QC roles.

Program Outline

Outline:

The Industrial Heterogeneous Catalysis MRes program is structured into three units: two projects (each worth 60 credits) and a taught component (worth 60 credits) to give the required 180 credits.

Taught Component:

  • Frontiers in Catalysis program: Students do a literature study and prepare a presentation and report on the subject.
  • 4 weeks of lectures: Lectures are clustered into four core modules, each covered in one week consisting of 24 hours' worth of teaching.
  • This allows students more continuous time in the lab for their projects.

Projects:

  • Each student does two projects of approximately 15 weeks duration plus 4 weeks writing up.
  • Two supervisors: one University of Glasgow academic staff and the second ex-industry honorary University of Glasgow staff.
  • Project areas can be in any area of heterogeneous catalysis from refinery to pharmaceutical applications.

Core Courses:

  • CATALYST ACTIVATION AND DEACTIVATION
  • CATALYST STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION FROM BULK TO SURFACE
  • CATALYST TESTING AND INDUSTRIAL PROCESS DEVELOPMENT

Teaching:

  • Students complete two projects with two supervisors: one University of Glasgow academic staff and the second ex-industry honorary University of Glasgow staff.
  • The two projects will have two supervisors, one University of Glasgow academic staff and the second ex-industry honorary University of Glasgow staff.
  • The program equips students to work in any aspect of the chemical industry with skills in data analysis, interpretation of published work, and practical methodologies.
  • Students will also understand where heterogeneous catalysis fits into facilitating the chemical industry, allowing them to rapidly fulfill plant support, research, QA, and QC roles.
  • Examples of potential job titles after completion of this program include Research Project Manager, Chemical Engineer, and Research Chemist.

Other:

  • The program is also designed to equip students to work in any aspect of the chemical industry.
  • Students will also understand where heterogeneous catalysis fits into facilitating the chemical industry, allowing them to rapidly fulfill plant support, research, QA, and QC roles.
  • The school has an Athena Swan Bronze Award, demonstrating the school's commitment to supporting women in scientific studies and careers.
  • This program is designed to give students the appropriate practical research skills and theoretical knowledge to embark on a future career in industry or academia.

Additional Notes:

  • This program is designed to give students the practical skills to undertake independent research in heterogeneous catalysis and to supply a thorough theoretical understanding of industrial heterogeneous catalysis.
  • Previous knowledge of catalysis is not required.
