Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements:


Academic qualifications:

  • Regular standard of admission: At least an Upper Second Class Honours degree (2:1) in relevant field or equivalent.
  • Master's degree: Candidates may also be expected to have completed or be undertaking a Masters qualification in a related field.

Research proposal:

  • Applicants are required to submit a research proposal outlining their proposed area of study.
  • This should be around 1,000 words and include:
  • The specific research question.
  • The significance and value of the research.
  • How the research will contribute to existing knowledge.
  • The proposed methodology and approach.
  • The primary sources to be utilized.
  • A bibliography of consulted and intended secondary sources.

Language Proficiency Requirements:

For applicants whose first language is not English, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level. Acceptable tests and minimum scores include:

  • IELTS: 7.0 overall with no subscore below 7.0.
  • TOEFL (ibt, mybest or athome): 94 overall with subscores of 24 in Reading, 24 in Listening, 23 in Speaking, and 27 in Writing.
  • Pearsons PTE Academic: 66 overall with no subscore below 66.
  • Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE) and Cambridge Advanced English (CAE): 185 overall with no subscore below 185.
  • Oxford English Test: Oxford ELLT 8 with OIDI level no less than 8 (27-28 in Reading and 20 in Listening) and OIDI level no less than 8 in Writing and Speaking.

Alternatives to English Language qualification:

  • Degree from a majority-English speaking country (as defined by the UKVI, including Canada if taught in English): Applicants must have studied for at least 2 years at the undergraduate level or 9 months at the Master's level, and completed their degree in the last 6 years.
  • Undergraduate 2+2 degree from a majority-English speaking country (as defined by the UKVI, including Canada if taught in English): Applicants must have completed their final two years of study in that country within the last 6 years.
