Program Overview

The program offers a combination of theoretical and practical learning, with a focus on multiple modes of transport and the use of technology. Graduates are well-positioned for careers in government agencies, consultancies, and non-profit organizations.

Program Outline

Masters in Urban Transport

Degree Overview:

The Masters in Urban Transport offers a comprehensive academic approach to a career in one of the most salient and pressing issues in contemporary urban areas; how to provide safe, inclusive, environmentally friendly and efficient transport systems. The program is intended to ensure that students become familiar with multiple approaches to planning and managing urban transport systems. It will provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge to be employed in governmental organizations and private sector consultancies.

#Objectives:

  • Equip students with a comprehensive understanding of the policies and planning processes to reduce congestion, air pollution, road fatalities and lack of access.
  • Provide students with a focus on multiple modes of urban transport – roads, public transport, active transport, emerging shared and intermodal transport - and the use of information technology in transport, enabling students to design highly innovative urban transport solutions in both developed and emerging country contexts.
  • Furnish students with the theory and methods, as well as hands-on knowledge to be employed in governmental organizations and private sector consultancies.
  • Allow students to gain skills increasingly required by transport professionals, and acquire specialist knowledge and methods to analyze cities and transport using GIS, statistical and visualization approaches and other planning software and tools.
  • Utilize these skills to develop city and transport plans and policies, conduct environmental and other impact evaluation, and undertake a wide variety of geographical and market analysis.

Outline:

#Program Structure:

  • Five core courses and two or three optional courses.
  • Key courses on transport followed by lab sessions where practical lessons on the use of highly specialized software will be taught in the form of either independent or group projects.
  • This approach will equip students to not only acquire theoretical knowledge but also to apply their knowledge to real-world problems with actual data.
  • Optional courses provide students with the opportunity to pursue personal interests, enhancing specific skills or domain-specific knowledge such as urban analytics or spatial planning.
  • A cross-disciplinary course approach ensures students learn industry-specific skills in both transport planning and engineering and allows them to focus more heavily on either of the two strands of the program.
  • Students will be expected to submit essays and lab reports as part of the program assessment and a dissertation at the end of the program.
  • #Core Courses:
  • PRINCIPLES AND APPLICATIONS OF GIS
  • TRANSPORT PLANNING METHODS
  • TRANSPORT STUDIES
  • SPATIAL PLANNING STRATEGIES
  • #Program Alteration or Discontinuation:
  • The University of Glasgow endeavors to run all programs as advertised. However, exceptional circumstances may lead to withdrawal or alteration of a program.
  • The program will help students understand the broad range of stakeholders in city planning and urban transport systems and the connections to other vital sectors in cities.
  • Students will gain insight into the complex socioeconomic dynamics of city building and design through visits to high-profile real estate, planning and regeneration projects.
  • Students will have the opportunity to meet and speak with senior industry professionals and policy-makers involved in the delivery of major urban developments.

Careers:

#Career Prospects:

Career opportunities include positions in government agencies, urban planning organizations, city governments, transport and other private consulting firms, and non-profit organizations. Graduates from this program will be well placed to get into a wide range of jobs, which includes professions such as transport modeler, urban planner, or pursuing the program at a PhD level. The practical knowledge and hands-on skills taught as part of the program are applicable worldwide. Students will have the chance to learn about new emerging forms of transport data and analytical skills. These specialist skills will give them an unprecedented advantage in the global and UK job market.
