What is the TOEFL Test?

For starters, TOEFL is an acronym for the Test of English as a Foreign Language. Since it’s been created in 1964, more than 35 million people have taken it to measure how proficient and fluent they are in regard to listening, speaking, reading and writing in English. The test is required of international students by over 10,000 universities in more than 150 countries all over the globe to guarantee great communication and the best learning experience for the student.

While there are some other English tests that a university might request, a TOEFL test is the most accepted measurement worldwide. The best part about it is that it can be taken online. There are different types or levels you might say of a TOEFL test. There’s the primary one for 8+ year-olds students, junior for 11+ year-olds, ITP for university-level learners, and the one you need to take is the TOEFL iBT, which measures English proficiency for students who want to get admitted to universities.

The 4 main test sections:

• Reading: where test takers read academic texts and answer questions about them, which takes from 60 to 80 minutes.

• Listening: which takes from 60 minutes to 90 minutes, where students listen to lectures or a classroom discussion and answer questions about it.

Speaking: where students basically have a conversation about the topic discussed in the reading and listening sections, and it takes 20 minutes.

• Writing: section in which a student takes 50 minutes to write an essay discussing an opinion about the topic discussed in the previous sections.

Each section is 30 points, and the result is usually announced from 6 to 10 days after taking the test.
